Brooke Shields on Aesthetics and Modern Beauty Trends

“Aesthetics has thoroughly become mainstream!” I stated, in an awkward manner of introduction, as I sat with the supermodel, actress, and genuine beauty icon Brooke Shields, who is currently the celebrity ambassador for WarmSculpting (previously known as SculpSure). A decade ago, after initially attempting Botox and exploring laser treatments, Shields quipped that she was through, expressing her fear of ending up resembling “the Joker.” But that was in the past; throughout the last ten years, the industry has made significant progress—with novel devices, enhanced techniques, and technological advancements that have tackled everything from discomfort to unnatural-looking outcomes.

I was intrigued—did the developments in aesthetics manage to change her perspective?

“Concerning my face, I still deem [procedures] truly terrifying,” Shields remarks. “So I haven't [undertaken any]. People might possibly look at me and believe I require it, but I'm somewhat apprehensive. However, as I've aged, I've also come to understand that it's truly about what makes you feel good about yourself. And if that involves this or that procedure, it's your choice. You possess your body, you own your face, you have control over your skin. If you're doing it for yourself [and not] for an external source or as a comparison, which I think can be perilous, then it's yours to decide. And non-invasive [treatments] have altered my perception regarding what I'm comfortable with.”

Shields said she was attracted to WarmSculpting because the brand promoted it as a component within a healthy lifestyle, not as a rapid solution. The non-surgical body-contouring treatment utilizes laser energy to heat and eliminate fat cells (up to a claimed 24% per session) and has received FDA approval for the treatment of the abdomen, the flanks, the thighs, the back, and the area under the chin.

“I still need to put in all the effort, and I work out intensely with a trainer [and I do] yoga and Pilates,” Shields says. “WarmSculpting doesn't claim to bring about substantial changes. It's not a weight-loss program—it was essentially there to assist me in dealing with the stubborn areas that persisted even after having two children.”

As the mother of two teenage daughters—Rowan and Grier—Shields isn't entirely in favor of the contemporary proliferation of cosmetic surgery. Referring to the recent Instagram ban on plastic surgery content for users under 18, Shields states, “That's highly responsible of Instagram, and I'm grateful for it. But I believe that the addiction that [teenagers] have to that type of content is insidious—and unfortunately, it doesn't truly matter what they prohibit, because these kids are drawn to all of it. They're like heat-seeking missiles, and they will find it—and they discover it using various methods.”

“My kids are 13 and 16,” Shields continues. “[Opting for aesthetics procedures at that age] is absurd. They need to be older. Let them graduate and either get married or not. But at least finish college and reach a certain age range. The issue is, you're observing these young girls undergoing all these procedures. I simply think it's harsh. I don't think they should do any of it.”

“Plus it's costly, and I'm not footing the bill for it,” she adds.

But, it turns out, it's Shields' children who might be offering her the finest beauty advice—one that has no relation to treatments. “Frequently, they're the first to say, ‘Mom, you should take pride in how you look’ when I didn't think that was an option. I always thought negatively. It was always part of my usual language, and I've learned that they have taught me to celebrate myself and my body more.”
