How to Reverse Butt Augmentation Results
The majority of plastic surgeries are irreversible - you can't simply undo a facelift or a tummy tuck. However, there are exceptions, and a few procedures can be reversed if you're dissatisfied with the outcome or your aesthetic preferences shift. Buttock augmentations belong to this category - although this doesn't imply that reversals are effortless or something to be taken casually. "Be cautious about what you desire when it comes to butt augmentation. When individuals go too far, it frequently doesn't turn out as they expected. And while reversals are feasible, they can often be more demanding than the initial procedures," clarifies Dr. Johnny Franco, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Austin, Texas.
There has been a recent increase in butt augmentation reversals, especially with Brazilian butt lifts, as stated by Dr. Matthew Nykiel, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Newport Beach, California. "We're observing a comparable shift to what we witnessed in the '90s with breasts. Massive breasts went out of fashion in favor of a more natural hourglass shape, and now the same is happening with the butt. People are coming in seeking a balanced look, not something overly large and dramatic," he remarks. (For instance: Google "Kardashian BBL reversal" for numerous fan theories.) Here, more on how and when you can reverse the outcomes of three types of butt augmentation procedures.
How to Reverse a BBL
"If someone believes their butt is overly large after a BBL, the first thing I suggest is to wait," says Dr. Nykiel. "Many aspects are evolving and changing after the surgery, so I always recommend waiting for a full year before considering reducing the volume." (Waiting also reduces the possibility of potential complications from the reversal.) If you remain dissatisfied, the solution is relatively straightforward - performing liposuction to remove some excess fat. That is, except if you had a BBL in another country where the fat was injected into the muscle - a technique seldom carried out in the U.S. - in which case, liposuction is not an option. "You can't insert a liposuction cannula into the muscle, as it would essentially transform it into a piece of Swiss cheese with holes all over," explains Dr. Nykiel. Liposuction is only a viable solution if the fat was placed above the muscle.
"I've never encountered anyone wanting to return to the starting point," says Dr. Nykiel. "Most people undergo a BBL because they feel their butt is somewhat inadequate. If they exceeded the desired amount and had too much inserted, then we can intervene and remove some of it, but not all of it," he states. While the precise amount varies depending on the patient, he says, he never removes more than 400–500cc of fat per buttock cheek: "That typically makes a considerable difference without completely losing the butt."
