I have a slight droop from my Botox treatment and would like to explore over-the-counter options before considering a prescription. Which OTC eye drops can help counter the effect of a drooping eyelid caused by Botox treatment? Thank you for your assistance.
Eyelid droop caused by Botox can be corrected using a prescription eye drop called Iopidine 0.5%. This drop can help alleviate the droopiness within a few weeks to a month. Alternatively, you can wait for a couple of months for the effects of the Botox to wear off, which will also resolve the droopiness. It is advisable to consult your injector instead of self-medicating to ensure proper guidance and treatment.
Unfortunately, over-the-counter eye drops offer minimal to no improvement for eyelid droop. I recommend consulting with your injecting physician to ensure that it is indeed eyelid droop and not eyebrow droop. They may prescribe Apraclonidine 0.5 to be used 3-4 times per day, as it can raise the eyelid by an average of 2mm. Make sure your physician discusses all potential side effects of the eye drops, including "adrenaline-like" symptoms such as anxiety and increased heart rate, as well as possible eye irritation, dryness, and pain. Best of luck.
Consult with your treating physician to determine if drops would benefit you. Effective drops usually require a prescription.
It is important to differentiate between brow drop and eyelid drop. Iopidine is often prescribed to counter eyelid droop, which should resolve within 2 to 6 weeks without further treatment. Over-the-counter drops are not recommended for eyelid ptosis.
