I woke up with a droopy eyelid, famously known as ptosis, 4 days after receiving Dysport injections. After unsuccessful attempts to get a prescription from my doctor, I went to the pharmacy and purchased Naphcon-A eye drops, which provided great relief. My concern is that the effect of the drops seems to only last a couple of hours, and the instructions recommend taking them a maximum of 4 times a day for 4 days. How long is it safe to continue using the drops, and how many times a day can I use them?
Drops like Naphcon that are designed to 'remove redness' should not be used for more than 4-5 days. These drops function as vasoconstrictors, meaning they constrict blood vessels, and your eyes can eventually become tolerant to them. As a result, if you cease using the drops, your eyes will perpetually appear red. For managing a temporary droopy eyelid following a botox or dysport treatment, the ideal option is typically apraclonidine, also known as Iopidine, eye drops. These don't have the same effect of whitening the eye, and their prolonged use can cause irritation. Reserve the use of the drop for special events, and be patient while the Dysport effect diminishes.
Yes, the effects of the drops only last for a few hours. The recommended frequency is every 3-4 hours, up to 4 times per day, during the hours you'd be awake. In most cases of droopy eyelids, it can take a few weeks for the muscles to re-tighten and lift on their own. I have never advised people to use the drops for only 4 days, and I'm unsure why the NaphconA packaging would suggest that. In my opinion, you can use them 4 times per day for as long as needed.
