I'm scheduled for surgery on March 10th, and my surgeon informed me that I will need to remove my nipple piercings for approximately 3 weeks. I'm worried about the piercings closing during this time. If they do close, how long should I wait before getting them re-pierced? Additionally, what is the risk of nipple piercings causing infection after a breast augmentation? I've had my piercings for 9 months without any infections, but I want to ensure the safety of my breast augmentation.
Having your nipples pierced does increase the risk of infection due to the presence of more bacteria in and around the nipples within the small tunnel. It is advisable to wait at least 6 weeks before piercing them, and it may be even better to avoid repiercing altogether.
Your surgeon is the best person to address these questions since they have advised you to remove your piercings. While there is no guarantee that your piercings will close, it is advisable to follow your surgeon's advice.
I recommend to my patients that they can get new piercings 6 weeks after their surgery. For their existing piercings, they can use plastic spacers and retain them during the procedure. During the surgery, I ensure the nipple/areola area is covered with a sterile piece of Tegaderm.
It is important to listen to your surgeon's recommendation and have nipple piercings removed before surgery to minimize the risk of infection and complications. The surgeon will provide guidance on when it is safe to repierce after recovery.
