Three days after my surgery, I accidentally ate four of my daughter's gummy vitamins and just realized that they contain vitamin E. I haven't consumed anything else on the restricted list, and I hadn't taken them prior to this incident. I'm worried that this might require rescheduling my breast lift and augmentation. Should I be concerned? Thank you for your advice.
Taking high doses of Vitamin E has been found to impair clotting and can increase the risk of bruising and hematoma complications following breast surgery. It is advised to avoid breast surgery for at least ten days after taking a Vitamin E capsule exceeding 400 units, as higher doses can affect platelet adhesion, a crucial step in clotting. However, the small doses of Vitamin E included in an average multivitamin pill are generally safe and not a cause for concern.
A small increase in the risk of excess bleeding is expected with a couple of vitamin E capsules a few days before surgery. It is advisable to inform your surgeon about this and seek their opinion, as they are familiar with your medical history and surgical plan. Best of luck with your surgery.
High doses of vitamin E can affect platelet function and increase the risk of bleeding. If you had a small dose three days before surgery, it is likely not significant, but inform your surgeon about the vitamin D units in the vitamins for their evaluation.
