I had my second photofacial session yesterday, and I'm slightly disappointed because I only see one, maybe two small coffee ground-like dark spots on my face, and they're not even in the hyperpigmented areas that concern me the most. I thought the presence of these darker spots indicated that the treatment was working, as I had some after the first session. Does the absence of these spots this time mean that my spots won't lighten further?
Your question is indeed intriguing. We often hear about such occurrences following IPL/BBL treatments, as well as after chemical peels and other similar procedures. While some treatments might cause minor scabbing and peeling, not experiencing these symptoms doesn't mean that the treatment wasn't beneficial. You are more likely to see scabbing/peeling/coffee-ground like symptoms when you initially start these treatments. These symptoms tend to lessen with each subsequent treatment as the number or intensity of spots decrease after each session.
There is no requirement for coffee grounds to achieve a successful treatment. Different types of brown spots may respond differently to treatments, and not all spots will have the same outcome after IPL treatment. It is important to consult with a trained medical professional in person for appropriate care.
