It is 8 days after my surgery, which involved a breast lift, liposuction, and Brazilian butt lift (BBL). I have noticed that everything I drink seems to go right through me. Is this a normal occurrence during the recovery period?

In liposuction, the tumescent technique is the standard of care. This involves preparing the fat for removal prior to extraction. The fat is prepared by injecting a solution of IV fluid to liquefy the fat and improve aspiration, lidocaine for comfort, and epinephrine to constrict blood vessels and reduce bleeding and bruising. Liters of fluid may be injected. Some of the fluid is aspirated with the fat, some may leak out through the incision, and some remains as part of the swelling. Apart from this retained volume, a long operative case necessitates ongoing IV hydration. Thus, most patients leave the operating room even heavier due to water weight! As a patient recovers from surgery, the body "mobilizes" this fluid and eliminates it through urination. This diuresis is a sign of healing and progress and will resolve over time.

Yes, it is common to experience mobilization of edema after the first 3 days following surgery. This is particularly true with liposuction, as a significant amount of saline (salt water) is injected to minimize blood loss during the procedure. The sodium in saline retains fluid, so the process of mobilizing the sodium out of your body helps reduce swelling. #liposuction

During the first week after surgery, water retention is common, and increased urine flow typically occurs in the second week as the body mobilizes the excess fluid. Fever or pain while urinating could indicate a urinary tract infection.

Swelling after liposuction is expected, and it can cause dehydration initially. The swelling will eventually subside, and excess fluid will be eliminated by the kidneys.
