There is no inherent risk in using lightening creams and retinol on surgical scars to aid in scar maturation. Hyperpigmented scars may benefit from a prescription bleaching cream, but it may take several months to see a change. If the scars are thick or raised, seeing a board-certified Dermatologist for treatment to flatten them out may be necessary.
