Is it absolutely necessary to use foam under compression garments after undergoing liposuction? Does it actually provide any benefits? If so, how long should it be worn? I will be having liposuction on my abdomen, flanks, and hips, along with a mini tuck in two weeks. (Not that it's relevant, but I'm also having a divot BBL and breast augmentation replacement.)
Thanks for the question. I've personally tried various combinations of garments and foams, but we ultimately stopped using foam as it caused more problems than it solved. Ultimately, the technology and surgical technique used by your surgeon will have the greatest impact on your outcome, not the garment or foam. Ensure that you are satisfied with your choice of surgeon!
I find it highly beneficial for patients to wear foam underneath their garments after liposuction for several reasons. Firstly, it provides added comfort and padding. It also helps control bruising and prevents the formation of lines. Additionally, foam protects the skin from pressure-related circulation issues and prevents seams from indenting or etching the skin. In areas prone to fluid accumulation, such as the back near the buttock crease, foam can be used to apply additional pressure. It's important to have the foam applied by therapists who are experienced in massage, lymphatic drainage, and the healing process. They know where and how to place the foam and can provide guidance on proper garment fitting. In my practice, I refer all my liposuction and BBL patients for ten or twenty massage treatments post-surgery, as it significantly contributes to patient comfort, minimizes skin issues, and yields the best possible results.
Foam pads placed inside compression garments after liposuction can help prevent depressed lines or grooves caused by garment seams. While not necessary, they can be helpful.
Foam can help decrease bruising after liposuction, typically used for 3-5 days. Wearing a garment for 4-6 weeks is also recommended, but it's essential to consult with the surgeon for specific instructions.
