During a recent breast augmentation consultation, I was informed that I would need to remove all my piercings, including those on my bottom lip, tongue, nostril, bridge, ears, and a dermal on my chest, a month before the procedure. Could someone explain why it's necessary to remove all piercings, not just those close to the operation site?
When preparing for surgery, it is necessary to remove piercings for two main reasons. Firstly, any pressure on the piercings during the procedure can lead to tissue loss, as you may not be aware of the pressure and unable to relieve it. Secondly, electrosurgical devices are commonly used during surgery to cut tissue and control bleeding. The presence of piercings can divert electrical currents, which may also result in tissue loss. However, there is generally no need to remove the piercings earlier than the day before the surgery.
All metal piercings must be removed. There are plastic replacements available that can maintain the piercing hole. Metal can cause burns on the skin during surgery, especially when cautery is used to control bleeding. To ensure safety, it is mandatory to remove all metal piercings before undergoing any surgical procedure in a surgery center.
