Following my hysterectomy 3 years ago, I have had a permanent lower abdominal bulge. It appeared immediately after the surgery. What might have caused this?

The bulge you are experiencing is most likely caused by muscle weakness, which can be a result of previous pregnancy and surgery. This can often be repaired or reinforced during an abdominoplasty procedure. Recovery from an abdominoplasty is different from hysterectomy recovery but may have some similarities in terms of the time frame. After undergoing abdominal wall surgery, such as a hysterectomy, there is often some weakness in the abdominal wall, which can result in a "pooch." Ideally, as you heal, this "pooch" will resolve. However, if it persists, a tummy tuck may be an option. The recovery from a tummy tuck is neither harder nor easier than the recovery from a hysterectomy, but rather different. Postoperative protocols may vary among plastic surgeons, but typically, patients can resume unrestricted activities, including abdominal strengthening exercises, around 6 weeks after surgery.
