I'm scheduled to have an umbilical hernia repaired. Can I also get liposuction done at the same time? I work out regularly and am in great shape, but I have a stubborn layer of fat in my midsection. I'm wondering if it's possible to have liposuction performed during the umbilical hernia repair. My general surgeon plans to go through the top of my belly button to minimize scarring, and mesh won't be used since the hernia is small. Thank you for your advice!

As the other surgeons have mentioned, combining procedures is often a wise choice for several reasons: it requires only one anesthesia, one recovery period, and some of the cost may be split between the insurance company and yourself. However, it is crucial to ensure that you do not have an incarcerated umbilical hernia. In rare cases, a loop of intestine can become trapped in the hernia. If the bowel is injured during the repair, the case will be considered contaminated. Although the hernia repair can still be performed successfully in the majority of cases, liposuction should not be done at the same time as it could increase the risk of complications associated with a contaminated surgery. It is best to prioritize the safety of the procedure over the desire for liposuction, which is never considered a necessary procedure.

In my experience, umbilical hernia repair can be performed through a peri-umbilical semicircular incision. For small hernias, several permanent sutures carefully placed in the rectus fascia are usually sufficient for repair. After the hernia is addressed, liposuction can be performed through the umbilical incision and additional incisions in the lower abdomen.
