During week 3 of my recovery, I was advised to apply Vaseline to a non-healing wound and use scar cream on other incisions. However, by week 5, the wound appears to be worse. My doctor wants to prescribe Cipro as a precaution, but I am hesitant about taking more antibiotics without knowing if there is an infection. Considering I have acid reflux, would Bactrim be a better option with fewer side effects? Additionally, I have been doing wet-to-dry gauze treatments and have had a yellow discharge for weeks. Could it be pus?

Your surgeon needs to clean the wound and initiate a wound care regimen that promotes healing. It is important to focus on proper wound management rather than simply addressing immediate concerns. Antibiotics may not be necessary unless there are signs of spreading redness or increasing pain that suggest cellulitis. Open wounds rarely become infected, but the dead tissue in your wound needs to be removed for proper healing to occur.

It appears that there has been some tissue loss in that area, which is not uncommon. It is important to follow the guidance of your plastic surgeon. I would also recommend considering the use of ScaRxTape.com for your incisions, as it can help minimize their appearance. I typically advise my patients to use it for a period of two to three months.

Wound breakdown can occur, especially at vulnerable sites where skin flaps come together. A wound culture and dressing changes may be necessary.
