After having Juvederm injected into my lips, I noticed a horizontal line above my upper lip when I smile. Is there any way to correct this? The doctor attempted to relax the line by injecting Botox, but it didn't work. He then suggested injecting more filler into the line, but I declined as I'm not sure if that's the appropriate solution. He thinks he may have over-injected the upper lip, causing it to push upward when I smile. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this issue?
I frequently perform lip injections, and this specific line is usually not caused by volumizing the lip. It is typically already present and caused by the underlying muscle when there is volume loss above the lip (the upper cutaneous lip). Perhaps the previous Botox treatment did not have sufficient dosage or was injected in the wrong area. However, it is important not to overfill the line, as this can result in lumps and bumps. I would suggest filling the entire upper cutaneous lip (the area above the red part of your lip) with a soft filler, as this issue is partially due to volume loss. Combining it with some Botox may also be beneficial.
To improve the appearance in the overfilled area and the line, enzymatic degradation of the filler along with additional filler may be beneficial. I suggest consulting with a qualified physician to discuss your options.
Horizontal upper lip lines can be softened by injecting filler directly underneath the lines, especially if they have not been present for long.
If you are unhappy with the lip line after filler, hyaluronidase can be injected to remove the filler.
