The healing process of incisions follows a timeline. In the first week, there is communication and clean-up between the edges of the incision. During the second week, fibroblasts migrate and collagen starts to form. At this stage, there is some tensile strength, and wounds do not come apart if they have been properly closed with deep layers. By two weeks, the skin edges have joined well enough that it would be difficult for an opening to occur, even with intentional pulling. Tensile strength gradually increases and reaches its maximum around twelve weeks. Scar formation begins after three weeks, and between three to eight weeks, measures can be taken to promote the best possible scar quality in terms of flatness and narrowness. These measures may include using products like Embrace to protect the incision from tension or ensuring a good deep layer closure that reduces tension on the skin. If a hypertrophic scar (red, raised, thick, discolored) develops in the belly button, incision scar, or both, there are various options for improvement, including time alone, steroid injections to soften the scar, scar laser treatments like fractional Lux 1540, microneedling with or without platelet-rich plasma, and scar revision surgery if necessary.
In most cases, the healing rate of the belly button aligns with that of the main tummy tuck incision. However, there are instances where the blood supply to the belly button may be compromised, requiring a few additional weeks for healing. If you have concerns about healing, it is best to inform your surgeon who can provide specific guidance based on your individual case.
The healing of the belly button follows the same pace as the tummy wound. Any concerns should be addressed with the surgeon.
Healing after surgery starts immediately, and the duration can vary from 2 weeks to several months depending on individual factors. Following post-operative instructions and maintaining a protein-rich diet can aid in faster healing.
