I have redness surrounding my belly button, with red dots resembling stitches on the left half. There is a small scab, even though I don't have any more stitches in that area. My plastic surgeon examined my incisions a week ago and said they were healing well, but I would appreciate a second opinion. I am currently four weeks post-op. Thank you for your time and response.

Thank you for this interesting question. After any surgery, the wound healing process triggers inflammation, which is the immune system's response to heal the wounds. The redness around your belly button, following the pattern of the sutures, is a result of the inflammation caused by the stitches. Inflammation involves the production of new collagen and the removal of old collagen. This process requires a network of blood vessels carrying red blood cells, which appear as the red marks. The redness indicates that the scar is still in the dynamic phase, continuously producing new collagen. Over time, as the wound heals, the redness will diminish, and the scar will become static, appearing white. Differentiating between the redness of wound healing and infection can take years, but based on your description, it is likely related to wound healing and not a cause for concern.

Without pictures or an in-person assessment, it is impossible to provide specific advice or recommendations. However, incisions take varying amounts of time to heal in different individuals.
