I had a septoplasty at the end of August this year. The issue I'm currently facing is that before the surgery, my right nostril was blocked due to a deviated septum. After the surgery, the blockage has been reduced, but now my left nostril is completely blocked. I have tried using nasal rinses and decongestion sprays, but they have not been effective. It feels as though I need to blow out something substantial. Is it possible that my nose has deviated to the other side? Or could this be a build-up of "gunk" that will eventually clear on its own?
It is common for swelling to persist inside the nose for several months after a septoplasty and turbinate reduction. Ongoing symptoms of allergic rhinitis or sinusitis may contribute to the swelling, and nasal steroid sprays can provide relief. If you experience persistent crusting or dryness after surgery, this could also contribute to the swelling. I recommend discussing any post-operative concerns with your surgeon so they can conduct a thorough examination and rule out any excess scar tissue or crusting. All the best.
Hello Septoman! By three months, your septum and turbinates should be mostly healed. If you experience persistent nasal obstruction, it could be related to factors like deviation, recurrent turbinate hypertrophy, crusting, or other structural changes impeding your breathing. Without examining your nose, determining the exact cause is challenging, so it's best to consult your surgeon. Once the cause is identified, appropriate treatment can be determined.
Surgical swelling inside the nose should be resolved by 3 months post-op. If you are experiencing sneezing, itching, or nasal discharge, it could be signs of allergic rhinitis. If the blockage on the left side has recently occurred, it may be due to inflammation, while immediate blockage could indicate a structural issue related to the surgery. Discuss these concerns with your surgeon for guidance.
