After my tummy tuck and liposuction, I continued to collect seroma even after the drainage was removed. My doctor extracted it using a syringe. However, two weeks after the last extraction, I feel a hard ball-like lump on the upper part of my abdomen near my rib cage. I'm unsure if it's a hematoma or seroma, and I'm wondering if massaging the area would help minimize it. How long can I expect it to last?

If the "hard ball" is located where the seroma was, it is likely that you have more seroma fluid. In my experience, seroma fluid usually needs to be removed at least five times before it stops forming. Hematomas are usually bruised and painful, while seromas tend not to cause pain. It could also be scar tissue from the seroma. I recommend consulting with your surgeon to determine the exact cause and appropriate treatment. Massage alone may not be sufficient for addressing a seroma or hematoma. Best wishes.

Based on your description, it is possible that you have a recurrent seroma. Delayed formation of a hematoma after surgery is uncommon. Another possibility is the presence of scar tissue. To determine the cause, I recommend undergoing an ultrasound examination. It would be best to consult your surgeon for further evaluation. Seromas often require multiple drainage procedures. Determining the exact nature of the hard lump at the top of your abdomen is challenging. It could potentially be fluid accumulation, fat necrosis, or the result of the plication procedure.

It is highly likely that you have developed another seroma. Since self-management of plastic surgery complications is not advisable, I strongly recommend seeing your plastic surgeon immediately for proper management. It is beneficial for the doctor and patient to have regular follow-up appointments, potentially on a weekly basis, to remove the fluid and prevent the accumulation that could lead to a chronic seroma or other complications.
