I am currently 3 weeks post-op from a tummy tuck and liposuction procedure on my stomach, lower back, and love handles. However, I feel like I am double the size I was before the surgery. Despite having a flat tummy, I still appear bloated, and it seems like I have love handles. Could this be swelling? I expected to be smaller after the surgery, not bigger.
Without pictures, it is challenging to assess the situation accurately. However, let's review what typically occurs after surgery. I advise my patients not to weigh themselves immediately after surgery as their weight may be up by 10-15 lbs. This weight gain occurs because the body detects significant stress and releases stress hormones, which help retain fluid for survival. This fluid manifests as skin/tissue swelling and weight gain. After the stress from surgery subsides, the fluid is released and eliminated through urination, typically around 4-6 weeks post-surgery. Bloating can also be a result of the constipating effects of narcotic pain medications often prescribed after surgery. Hematomas, or blood under the skin, can cause swollen skin and bruising below the surgical area. I recommend discussing these concerns with your surgeon.
It is completely normal to experience swelling three weeks after a tummy tuck. I advise my patients to wear a support garment and avoid exercise for the first six weeks. Make sure to keep your appointments with your plastic surgeon. I hope this information helps, and I wish you all the best.
Swelling and bruising are normal during the early stages of healing after surgery. It takes several weeks to months to see the final results. If you have concerns, discuss them with your surgeon for reassurance.
Swelling after surgery is expected, but it's important to check with the surgeon to rule out any fluid collections that may require drainage.
