I accidentally blew my nose quite forcefully on the fifth day after my septoplasty, even though I was instructed not to do so for a couple of weeks. Could I have caused any damage to the procedure?
In general, we recommend that patients who have undergone Rhinoplasty and/or Septoplasty refrain from blowing their noses for approximately 2 weeks after the procedure. Instead, nasal saline irrigations are recommended to help clean the nose. If necessary, sneezing should be done through the mouth. I suggest speaking to your surgeon about your concerns, as they can provide specific guidance based on the details of your procedure. It may be beneficial for your surgeon to examine your nose to ensure everything is progressing as expected.
After septoplasty, blowing the nose should be done with caution as it can increase the risk of bleeding and disrupt sutures. If you have any concerns, I recommend discussing them with your surgeon, who will provide the best guidance during your follow-up.
Usually, mild nose-blowing after septoplasty will not cause any harm. The main concern is the possibility of triggering a nose bleed. However, there is also a chance of creating a septal perforation or disturbing the septal flaps or cartilage under the flaps with nose-blowing soon after the operation. Therefore, I advise my patients to avoid blowing the nose for at least two weeks after surgery, and even then, to do it very carefully. Regards,
Blowing your nose after septoplasty is typically not recommended within the first week, but it's unlikely to have altered the shape of the nasal septum. Consult with your surgeon for a postoperative check-up.
